Wait for an email from Adam Kruszka adam.kruszka@jssa-sports.org with your online blended learning instructions and course schedule location and time. You will create a Red Cross Learning Center account.
Create your eBook account to access the 2024 Lifeguarding Manual. This is separate from your Red Cross Learning Center account.
Complete online blended learning prior to the first in-person session.
Pay your fees online with card or pay in cash on the first day of the in-person session.

Arrive to the in-person session with proof of ID (must be 15 years or older) and payment (if not already paid). This may be a school ID with your birthdate, school ID plus birth certificate, state learners permit, state provisional operator's permit, driver's license, or passport. FORMS OF ID MUST INCLUDE PHOTO-ID AND BIRTHDATE.
Complete the course prerequisites on the first day of the in-person sessions. Candidates not able to complete the prerequisites will be unable to participate in the course and referred to swimming lessons.
Attend each in-person session and successfully participate.
Complete the 50 question, multiple choice, final exam with a passing grade of 80% or higher on the last day of the in-person sessions. (Participants will be able to try once on exam A and once on exam B for a total of 2 attempts)
Successfully complete the final skill assessments on the last day of the in-person sessions.
Passive submerged rescue, rapid extrication, rapid assessment (2 initial ventilations within 1 minute 30 seconds), 3 minutes of single-rescuer CPR. (Completed twice as primary and as assisting rescuer)
Rotate into the lifeguard supervision station, conduct surveillance for ≥1 minute, and rotate out of the station.
Passive submerged rescue, rapid extrication, rapid assessment, multiple rescuer CPR with use of AED and BVM. (Completed twice as primary and as assisting rescuer)
Receive your American Red Cross Lifeguarding certificate, valid for 2 years, on the last day of the in-person session after successful completion of the course. (In rare cases, participants may need to wait up to 10 business days for their certificate)
Contact Adam Kruszka at adam.kruszka@jssa-sports.org to renew your CPR for the Professional Rescuer certificate after one year. The State of Nebraska only recognizes lifeguarding certificates with CPR certificates completed within one calendar year.

You are required to use the Lifeguarding Manual 2024 to complete this course. The manual is very helpful for completing the online portion.

Paid by credit/debit card or cash. Payment is due on the first day of in-person training sessions.
You will receive a bill via email from the James Scurlock Sports Academy (JSSA) to pay via credit/debit card online.
Students will be required to participate and meet the objectives indicated in the Lifeguarding Manual and pass a Lifeguarding written exam with a passing grade of 80% or higher. Students will be allowed only one retake of an alternate exam.
Certificates are available online with the American Red Cross within 10 days of completion with a passing grade.
Prerequisites:
The first hour of the first in-person session of this course is designed for instructors to verify participant age with photo-ID and complete the in-water physical prerequisites.
Participants must be 15 years of age on or before the last scheduled session of the course. Individuals who do not meet the age requirements for the course may be directed to the Junior Lifeguarding program, which is designed for participants between the ages of 11 and 14 years.
Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence
■ Swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
-Swimming on the back or side is not permitted.
-Swim goggles are allowed.
■ Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
■ Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
Timed Event
Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
■ Starting in the water, swim 20 yards.
-The face may be in or out of the water.
-Swim goggles are not allowed.
■ Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
■ Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face at or near the surface.
■ Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
